Last month we got to be a part of Melissa and Michael’s big day. Let me start off by saying that Melissa has such classy taste. Her blush dress is absolutely gorgeous! Lindsay and Sarah did such an amazing job on the hair & makeup. Melissa is the definition of a glowing bride.

Carnival Styled Engagement Shoot

Back on March 3rd I did the makeup for a styled shoot with Stacy Sullivan from Set Free Photography. Lizzy and Kevin celebrated their engagement at the Fair. The styling for the shoot was done by Along Came Stephanie. I love the bright vivid colors in these pictures and they paired it well with their simple, but stylish outfit choices.

At Hope Artistry, we love when you give us feedback and ask for advice. One of our past, fabulous brides asked us to blog about makeup tips for her honeymoon and we are more than happy to! If it were a profession, I may have chosen to be professional packer over makeup artist. Yes, I’m that obsessive. As our intelligent bride has suggested, it really is important to consider the climate of your destination, because it can change your makeup needs. For example if you get married in Chicago (in February) when it is BRRRR, then honeymoon in Costa Rica (same month) when it is low to mid 80’s you wouldn’t want to forget to pack makeup with SPF.

To Airbrush or Not to Airbrush

Airbrush vs. Traditional

Airbrush Makeup is a way of spraying on your foundation and as a result, a fine mist of foundation is applied in layers on your face resulting in a flawless, even, and long-lasting finish. Airbrush does not work on every skin type which is why, at Hope Artistry, we don’t believe in charging more for airbrush because the best one for the bride depends on her skin, the weather, and how she normally wears her makeup. So if you are interested in Airbrush, here are some PROS for you.

Savvylicious Sweets

We are going to focus on something other than makeup for this post. I have had the pleasure of meeting an incredibly inspiring lady. Her name is Ana Anselmo and is the creator of Savvylicious Sweets, a fabulous dessert shop in Miami, Fl. that specializes in Cake Pops.

We’ve all heard of cake pops by now and some of us have tried to make them, but you haven’t tasted a real cake pop unless you have one from Savvylicious Sweets, trust me! They are the perfect concoction of melt in your mouth goodness.

I am inspired by anyone who can make food taste good and look good at the same time, but what inspires me most about Ana is how she chooses to use her life story to inspire others and make a difference. Savvylicious was named after her daughter, Savannah, nicknamed “Savvy.” Soon after Savvy was born, she was diagnosed with Biliary Atresia, a rare liver disease.

“Biliary Atresia affects approximately 1 in 15,000 births. The disease causes inflammation and obstruction of the bile ducts which results in the back up of bile in the liver. The bile destroys the healthy liver and forms scar tissue further trapping the bile and causing cirrhosis of the liver and finally liver failure. Savannah had cirrhosis of the liver and without a liver transplant she would not have lived.”

On Dec. 29, 2007 Savvy recieved a liver transplant and has grown up into such a beautiful little girl.

Savvy will require continual medication for the rest of her life because her liver transplant leaves her body, immune suppressed. A group of supporting volunteers have set a goal to raise $75,000 to help her family with the costs associated with Savannah’s condition and transplant. This fun cake pop was made as “Pops For A Purpose” with the Green Awareness ribbon symbolizing Organ Donation.

I would really like you all to go visit the donation website on Children’s Organ Transplant Association and consider donating some money to this wonderful family. Thank you Ana for living your life out loud with such grace and beauty, even though your life is not easy, you choose to be an example and encouragement to us all. Each of our lives has a story to tell and though we can’t always choose our life circumstances, we can choose how we respond to those circumstances. What story will you tell with your life?

What I love is how the photographer also captured their fun, crazy side.

Great hues of blue, Starfish and Sand make this nautical wedding complete. I adore this starfish wreath.

Plus this is a fun idea, that i actually haven’t seen before. Forget the traditional guest book and have the guests sign a surfboard.

Organic Makeup

Everything’s going green these days, including the cosmetic industry. What entails “green makeup”? Typically you should look for cosmetics that don’t have any chemical emulsifiers, binders, synthetics, fillers, or paraben preservatives. Parabens are a buzz word in the organic industry; they are preservatives that have been linked to causing cancer and will appear on the ingredient list like methylparaben, propylparaben, or butylparaben. T hedailygreen.com has a good post on specific ingredients to avoid in beauty products. Organic cosmetics, on the other hand, have ingredients that are derived from plants or minerals. When we apply makeup to our face, we don’t usually think about all the other harmful ingredients like synthetic chemicals that are absorbed into our skin and enter our blood stream (so consider this your friendly reminder). Other important reasons for using organic skin care are: 1) the testing is free from animal cruelty and 2) the ingredients are eco-friendly.

Now before you throw out all your makeup and start over check out a very informative site called EWG, Environmental Working Group. It’s a great database that gives you practical solutions to protect yourself and your family from everyday exposures to chemicals. Its the worlds largest personal care product safety guide.

“Our aim is to fill in where industry and government leave off. Companies are allowed to use almost any ingredient they wish. The U.S. government doesn’t review the safety of products before they’re sold. Our staff scientists compare the ingredients on personal care product labels and websites to information in nearly 60 toxicity and regulatory databases.”

If you are curious about how your own makeup, or a product you wish to purchase, rates on their database; simply type in the brand and it will give you the rating on a scale of 0-8. A zero rating is low toxicity for your skin and the environment and an 8 is considered a high hazard. They also list out all the ingredients and their individual toxicity ratings. One thing I’ve noticed from the site is their dislike for fragrances due to the high potential for allergens and immunosensitivity. Fragrances are very common in beauty products, and most likely made from a synthetic compound, not a natural ingredient.

Whenever you switch to a new beauty product, try a sample on your wrist and/or neck to check the color scheme for your skin and it’s possible reaction to it. From a Makeup Artist’s stand point, organic products that photograph well have been hard to find, but the future is bright and I am excited about how the cosmetic industry is changing for the better. Below are some natural and organic products that we have tried and enjoyed.

1) Josie Maran Bronzer at Sephora ($32.00)

EWG rating of 1

Formulated WITHOUT: Parabens, Sulfates, Synthetic Fragrances, Petrochemicals, Phthalates, GMOs, and Triclosan.

I have used this bronzer quite a bit for video and photo shoots

2) Burts Bees Intense Hydration Night Cream at ULTA

99% natural (not necessarily organic) but well known and easy to find.

EWG rating of 4

Key Ingredient is Clary Sage, a plant that thrives in the dry, windswept hills of the Mediterranean. It is said to have an exceptional ability to trap and retain moisture.

3) Organic Wear Lash Boosting Mascara at ULTA ($9.99)

EWG rating of 1

No parabens, synthetic chemicals, or GMO’s,

Not tested on animals & Vegan formulas.

My sister loves this because it is “clump free.”

4) Weleda Lip Balm ($6.00)

EWG rating of 2

Uses organic Ingredients found in the earth. No synthetic compounds, No toxic chemicals, No parabens.

5) Lush Aqua Marina Cleanser ($32.00)

EWG rating of 3

Lush products are all handmade from botanicals and minerals. The rating is a 3 which higher than i expected because of the fragrances they use.

New to Lush (so new, it’s not rated on EWG) is their Emotional Brilliance Line. This fun red lipstick ($22.95) is handmade from these ingredients: Jojoba Oil, Candelilla Wax, Rose Wax, & Titanium Dioxide. Can’t wait to try it.

Gluten Free Makeup

We all start out the new year a little more health conscious, so why not discuss the healthy trends in makeup such as Gluten free and Organic lines. Part 1 is dedicated to gluten free makeup, because I often get asked if it exists, (it does), and what brands are recommended. This is a heavily debated topic right now. Below is an excerpt from September 2012 when US News and World Report published an article entitled, Are Gluten Free Cosmetics Necessary? .

“Experts are split over whether sufferers should avoid cosmetics that contain gluten. Some are adamant that gluten-free cosmetics prevent flare-ups, while others suspect that the amount of gluten in makeup is too small to trigger real problems. There’s no standard protocol yet—and the question will remain murky until more research exists.”

Basically Doctors and researchers such as Dr. Michael Picco of the Mayo Clinic will tell you that gluten has to be ingested to negatively affect someone’s digestive system, so if you have Celiac’s disease or a gluten insensitivity it would be beneficial to abstain from makeup products like lipstick so you can avoid accidental ingestion.

“Gluten-containing skin-care products and cosmetics aren’t a problem unless you accidentally swallow them. For this reason, avoid using such products on your lips or around your mouth.” (Dr. Picco)

He also says a systemic allergic reaction to topical contact with wheat has never been reported. As of yet there is no test to determine a gluten reaction from skin contact. Its hard to believe the research when there are numerous subjective reports all over the web from people with Celiac Disease who cite flare ups when using products containing gluten, especially around their eyes and mouth. Some refer to a specific skin rash from topical contact with gluten called DH.

I agree with US News, that more research needs to be done. Gluten free is quite the fad right now, so its best to carefully consider for yourself why you are desiring to use gluten free cosmetics. From what i understand, the products that claim to be gluten free are also free of many other carcinogens and chemicals and in general may be considered healthier for your body and the environment.

Though I haven’t personally used these, here are 3 gluten free lip products that are most recommended and worth a try:

1) Red apple lipstick

2) Neutrogena Naturals

3) bareMinerals

Makeup concealer’s can be used to cover pimples, small blemishes, scars, and dark under-eye circles. For this post we are going to talk about the best concealers for those pesky dark circles. Dark circles, are likely to become more noticeable and permanent with age because as people get older, their skin loses collagen, becoming thinner and more translucent.” Dark circles can also appear due to things like heredity, fatigue, or allergies. For you “twenty somethings” that may be reading this, cherish your plump and youthful skin. For those of you with more mature skin, here’s a helpful hint: use a moisturizing concealer so it is less likely to set into your fine lines. At some point in our lives we will need a little concealment, so here are my 3 favorite concealers, each of which has several colors to best match your skin tone.

A great moisturizing concealer that doesn’t settle into your fine lines. Medium to high coverage. Paraben free.

2) Kat Vod D $25.00

If this can cover up tattoos then you better believe it can do the trick to hide your dark circles. Paraben Free.
